Society
& Animals Forum, Inc., (formerly Psychologists for
the Ethical Treatment of Animals), a 501(c)(3) organization,
produces educational programs and materials on the relationship
between human and non-human animals.
The
objective of Society & Animals Forum is to reduce
violence against human and non-human animals.
The organizational activities include publication, design,
production, and distribution of journals and other educational
materials, workshops, and advocacy programs.
To
reflect our expansion and name change revisions we have
reframed the organization into three Divisions: Academic,
Education and Training, and Research.
Rather than a dramatic shift, the three distinguish
the several areas that we have been working in for several
years, as follows:
1.
Academic Division - The goal of this Division
is to advance the field of human-animal studies. This
consists of two journals:
Society & Animals: Journal of Human-Animal
Studies is a cutting edge resource for scholars in the
social sciences and humanities. S&A publishes
studies that describe and analyze our human experiences
of non-human animals and their policy implications.
The Journal of Applied Animal Welfare Science (JAAWS)
publishes articles and commentaries on methods of experimentation,
husbandry, and care that demonstrably enhance the welfare
of non-human animals.
We also edit Human-Animal Studies, a book series
with the same remit and publisher as S&A .
We maintain the Human-Animal Studies Listserv, dedicated
to multidisciplinary discussions among scholars and
students. Finally, we support an effort to establish
a Human-Animal Studies Division in the American Psychological
Association..
2.
Education and Training Division - Our goal is
to promote programs, materials, tools and workshops
for professionals in the human services and allied health
professions, related to the relation between human violence
and animal abuse.
Levels of Professionals
include:
1.
Practitioners in the human services who have therapeutic
skills, working in social work, mental health,
psychology, domestic violence, and criminal justice.
These professionals often treat adult and child clients
for problems arising from animal abuse.
2
. Professionals in allied fields
of health, education and public services who work
specialty nurses, public health educators, teachers,
judges, law enforcement officials, and humane society
personnel.
3. Professionals
in the private sector who work in allied services
fields as veterinarians, lawyers and family physicians
Programs
developed:
Beyond Violence:
the Human-Animal Connection- this program consists
of a video and discussion guide, both available in
Spanish, with a speaker/ facilitator format option.
It is designed to provide information for the general public
about "The Link" including students from
eight grade and higher.
Beyond Violence:
the Human-Animal Connection - this is a Powerpoint
presentation on "The Link". It is designed
to provide information for professionals in the
fields of education, judicial systems, law enforcement
and healthcare about -the link- between animal
abuse and human violence.
AniCare
Model of Treatment for Animal Abuse - this program
is a manual designed to provide training for counseling
professionals who are treating adult animal abuse
perpetrators. The materials can be used for independent
learning or in combination with our expert trainer
workshop, which include the use of a DVD for case
study.
AniCareChild:
An Assessment and Treatment Approach for Childhood
Animal Abuse - this program is a manual intended to
provide training for clinical practitioners who are
treating at-risk children referred by the schools,
the courts or other agencies for behavioral
problems. It provides concrete interventions designed
for the assessment and identification of animal abuse;
and a cognitive behavior approach for
the treatment of childhood animal abuse. The material
can be used independently or in combination
with our expert trainer workshops, which includes
the use of a DVD for clinical case study.
3.
Research Division -Our goal is to advocate for
alternatives models to eliminate exploitation and suffering
of animals in biomedical and psychology labs and classrooms.
Emphasis is placed upon sharing expertise and working
to develop alternative models for use in biomedical and
psychology arenas; providing students with support for
non-animal classroom dissections.
Our new direction gives priority to the Education and
Training Division and maintains the Academic Division
at the same level of activity as we continue to develop
the multidisciplinary field of animal studies. We will
redirect our emphasis within the Research Division.
